A tribute to the magnificent Hill Sisters of Louisville, KY

The Accomplished Hill Sisters

Patty and Mildred:  the Educator and the Musician

Happy Birthday to You may be the Hills’ most famous contribution to international culture, but it was not the only one.

Patty Smith Hill took her interest in young children and their schooling to the 1896 Chicago World’s Fair, joined Teachers College at Columbia University, published dozens of articles and books discussing the progressive education approach of serious play and cooperative learning, and helped establish hundreds of kindergartens across America.

Mildred Jane Hill studied Louisville’s indigenous African American street calls, composed piano and vocal pieces for performance by her music students, and edited the daily newspaper’s monthly “music notes” page.
